Madeira Beach commissioners dismiss sister city idea

MADEIRA BEACH – A proposal that the city develop a sister city partnership with Madeira Island, Portugal, got a cool reception from the commission.City Manager Jil Silverboard researched the idea, which was part of a “city branding” presentation given by resident Kiki Zonari Stemm at City Hall last November. Stemm’s signature proposal was creation of a blue heron character called Maddy.Silverboard said a sister city partnership could be done for a relatively low cost but could require a significant commitment by the community. “We’d put a lot into it, but would probably get a lot out of it,” she said.Silverboard said that she did not know if Madeira Island would be interested in a relationship with Madeira Beach. She mentioned that the island is renowned for fine lace and Madeira wine.The commissioners saw little benefit in pursuing the sister city idea. Mayor Charles Parker termed the concept “a P.R. scheme” and said it would divert the city from other pressing issues.Commissioner John Wolbert said he saw no need for a sister city relationship. “What would we get from it?” he asked. Portugal is too far away, Commissioner Art Thomas decided.Commissioner Martha Boos, who was present at Stemm’s image presentation, said pictures of the island looked very nice but concluded “I don’t think it’s worth the effort.”Silverboard added that the idea could still be pursued by an organization like Rotary or other community group.
